Hierarchy and Communication
I, like many people have ideas and thoughts that pop into my head.
I have decided to write down (the ones that are publishable and legal), so I don’t forget them and they may be of assistance to you.
So recently I have been listening to ‘Creativity, Inc.’ by Ed Catmull former head of Pixar and Disney Animation, and this is one of the things that stood out for him. I love audiobooks…
After the successful launch of Toy Story, he discovered that all was not well in the company (read the book for detail) and drew what on the surface what is an obvious conclusion: “
The hierarchical structure of an organisation should not be its’ the communication structure.
It struck me like a lightning bolt as so distinct and yet so obviously not the case in most of the businesses I have worked. I wonder how many leaders’ can honestly say they are comfortable with their team going and talking to anyone else in the organisation or outside it about anything?
Of course, there will be times when the best person to speak to is the leader. I can think of more than one occasion where I have talked to someone, then chastised for doing so by my boss for not clearing it with the first. In most cases, the only reason for doing this was to give the leader validity.
If you are honest in reflecting on this, I am sure you will find such challenging insights for yourself and your business, I did.
